Fictionalising Recent History: Truth and Relevance

Description

This session will explore Vikki Heywood’s Miss Veal And Miss Ham set in 1950s Buckinghamshire and Eloise Williams’s Gaslight set in Victorian Cardiff.

Both plots involve courageous women and girls, quests, death, secret lives, and a character called Pernicious Sid…

Both writers have backgrounds in theatre, so stories with vivid characters, dark aspects, and compelling plot lines.

One is a love story and one is a detective tale, but both are tales of empowerment.

Chaired by Llangwm's brilliant Pippa the Pen, this session will cover:

  • the relevance of these stories now
  • the specific themes and settings of these stories
  • to what extent the authors need anything in common with their characters.
  • the up and downs of writing fiction set in recent history
  • blending historical facts with your fiction
  • writing female and male characters
  • what’s next for both authors.
