Roger Lewis, whose ( maternal ) grandmother came from Haverfordwest, and whose ( paternal ) great-grandmother was the sister of the Bishop of St David's, was born in Caerphilly, educated at Bassaleg Comprehensive, St Andrews University and Magdalen College, Oxford. He was made a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford, at the age of twenty-four. He then left academic life to live with his wife and children in Normandy, where he wrote The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, later filmed to acclaim by HBO, starring Geoffrey Rush, Charlize Theron and Stanley Tucci. Books on Laurence Olivier, Charles Hawtrey, and Anthony Burgess followed. His memoirs, Seasonal Suicide Notes and What Am I Still Doing Here ?, were voted Books of the Year by every newspaper and magazine. Lewis spent thirteen years researching and writing Erotic Vagrancy, in between contributing regular features and reviews to the Daily Mail. He also writes for The Times, The Telegraph, and The Oldie.
